Goodfellas

Goodfellas (1990)
a film by Martin Scorsese

Earth (Bonus Track)

Earth (1930)
a film by Alexander Dovzhenko

It is amazing how such an old movie can look so modern and daring. Dovzhenko films the sky, films the faces of people, film from the bottom even making cows look epic, moves the camera the over the dancing wheat making it look like a roaring crowd, frames a sunflower and makes it weep. This beautiful film explodes all the versatility of cinema to bring a political message. In this movie the sharp angles and the creative framing speaks as much as the brilliant music.
Thanks for the tip Annie Hall!

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
a film by Sergio Leone

The soundtrack, the characters and the scenes of this movie have flooded popular culture to its last corner. Nothing like the eyes of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in the final stand off or the cemetery twirling around the greedy in the Extasy of Gold. Simplicity is the key of the Western, and both Leone and Morricone knew it wellAnd a lesson for all bad guys in cinema: "When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk".

The Match Factory Girl

The Match Factory Girl (1990)
a film by Aki Kaurismäki

Sometimes the images and the silence talk with many words, but in aki Kaurismaki's films, the simple compositions and deep silences seem to scream. Not a single smile in the characters and not an extra word in the dialogues, but this movie steals bitter-sweet laughter and transmits isolation with a gentleness that mere words can't express.
